The Top 5 Day Trips from Rome

Must-see places within reach of Rome

While Rome has more than enough to keep visitors occupied for a lifetime, it also boasts a handy location in the centre of Italy making it a great base for exploring other towns and regions.

Here are our five favourite day trips from the Eternal City:

Tivoli

The small town of Tivoli, situated east of Rome, is famous for two fascinating sights. The Villa Adriana was built in the 2nd century AD as Emperor Hadrian’s country retreat and its ancient classical remains sprawl over 80 hectares of picturesque parkland. The 16th century Villa d’Este was constructed as the summer house of Cardinal Ippolito II of the noble d’Este family and is famed for its beautiful landscaped gardens and more than 50 spectacular fountains.

Tuscany

The region of Tuscany borders Rome’s Lazio region to the north and can be easily visited in a day. Head to Florence to see the fabulous Renaissance artwork of the Uffizi and Accademia galleries, tour the lovely hilltop towns of Siena, San Gimignano, Arezzo and Cortona, or visit the winemaking areas of Chianti or Val d’Orcia to spend the day visiting vineyards and tasting the world-renowned vino.

Amalfi Coast

Perhaps the most distinctive stretch of coastline in the world, Campania’s Amalfi Coast is home to secret coves, secluded beaches and gorgeous towns including Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The winding coast road, though not for the faint-hearted, offers some of Italy’s most breath-taking views.

Umbria

The landlocked region of Umbria is within easy daytrip distance and its peace and tranquillity mark the perfect change of pace from the frantic bustle of Rome. The cities of Orvieto and Perugia offer some of the region’s best-known artworks while the town of Assisi and its incredible Basilica of Saint Francis is one of Italy’s most famous pilgrimage sites.

Pompeii

The town of Pompeii, south of Naples, was frozen in time in 79AD when the eruption of the nearby volcano of Vesuvius buried the town in ash. Excavation led to the discovery of streets, villas, bars, a marketplace and amphitheatre as well as original frescoes and mosaics which give a unique glimpse into the daily life of the ancient Romans.

WOW!!! Let me say it again: WOW! I had the responsibility of planning an entire 2 week, first time trip to Italy for 6 of us (3 couples) which was a lot of pressure... When starting my research, and trip planning, the options were overwhelming! If you are reading this review and whether it is your first trip to Italy or a return trip, you can stop right here and contact "Miles and Miles"!
